Four Roses Small Batch Select
Hey, fellow spirits enthusiasts! Today, I embark on a perilous journey into the heart of my liquor cabinet, armed with nothing but a questionable palate and the indomitable spirit of someone who once confidently ordered a “fancy drink” at a dive bar. Four Roses Small Batch Select is a bourbon that certainly doesn’t pull any punches. As you can see, this bottle has been poured a few times. My Four Roses journey started when my wife purchased a bottle for our fourth wedding anniversary.
So, for the history lesson. Four Roses begins in 1888 as a love story, a marriage proposal, and a corsage of four roses. Paul Jones Jr. moved his business to Louisville, Kentucky, and opened an office on what no’s now called “Whiskey Row.” He registered the name and claimed production and sales back in the 1860s. Sliding into the present day, Four Roses has a long legacy that continues with their passion and pride for their award-winning bourbon—more on their history in my Bourbon Chronicles blog edition.
Right from the first sip, you’re greeted with a robust and complex flavor profile that sets it apart from its peers. The blend of six different bourbon recipes offers a delightful symphony of tastes, showcasing a perfect balance of sweet, spicy, and oaky notes. The higher proof, clocking in at 104, adds an extra layer of intensity that amplifies the overall experience.
One of the standout features of Small Batch Select is its versatility. Whether you enjoy it neat, on the rocks, or in a cocktail, this bourbon holds its own. The depth of flavors doesn’t get lost when mixed, making it a solid choice for seasoned bourbon enthusiasts and those just dipping their toes into the world of whiskey. However, the boldness might be a bit overwhelming for those accustomed to lighter spirits.
The packaging and presentation are also worth noting. The distinctive bottle design and the rich amber hue of the liquid inside make it visually appealing. It’s the bottle you’d be proud to showcase on your home bar. While it may be on the higher end in terms of price, the quality and craftsmanship are evident, making it a worthwhile investment for those seeking a premium bourbon experience. Also, remember that Four Roses uses two different mashbills and five different yeast strains to create ten unique bourbon recipes. Six of those recipes are blended to make Small Batch Select - OBSV, OBSK, OBSF, OESV, OESK, and OESF. By comparison, Four Roses Small Batch uses 4 of the ten recipes - OBSO, OBSK, OESO, and OESK. Four Roses Bourbon uses up to all ten recipes. This, in my opinion, makes the brand very unique compared to most. Four Roses Small Batch Select earns its place among the top-shelf bourbons, delivering a memorable and satisfying drinking experience and a lovely wedding anniversary gift!
Cheers to a dram good time! 🥃✨
