Castle & Key Small Batch Bourbon
Welcome, fellow bourbon enthusiasts, to the spirited universe of Castle & Key!
If you're a bourbon lover with a penchant for history, like myself, and a taste for the extraordinary, Castle & Key Small Batch Bourbon is a bottle that should undoubtedly find its way into your collection. I first learned of Castle & Key while watching a documentary on, you guessed it, Bourbon. NEAT was the doc, and it delivered a massive amount of info that ultimately directed me toward this fantastic distillery. Steeped in history, curated by the skilled hands of Marianne Barnes, Castle & Key is more than just a whiskey; it's a journey through time and flavor.
Before we dive into the tantalizing tasting notes, let's take a brief stroll down the corridors of time that make Castle & Key so unique. This will be brief because, much like a dated sports team, the grounds have seen father time and have passed through some talented hands. The distillery is nestled in the outskirts of Frankfort, Kentucky, about ten miles from the historic Buffalo Trace Distillery in the historic grounds of the Old Taylor Distillery, a landmark with roots tracing back to the late 1800s. It's a place where history echoes in every creak of the barrel house and whispers in the rustle of the surrounding botanical gardens. In 2014 Castle & Key was erected, and the restoration of the grounds began after being vacant for almost 100 years!
At the forefront of the team was Marianne Eaves (Barnes), the first female Master Distiller in Kentucky at the age of 28, as the brilliant mind behind Castle & Key's revival. Her expertise and passion have resurrected this once-abandoned gem, bringing it back to life with a dedication to craft and quality despite leaving the distillery to pursue other challenges. More on Marianne and the history of C&K in a later blog!
The Sentinel of Elegance
The Castle & Key Small Batch Bourbon bottle is as striking as the brand’s storied history. Its tall architectural silhouette reflects the grandeur of the restored distillery, paying homage to the iconic limestone castle at its heart. The label is a masterpiece of design, featuring intricate detailing that mirrors the artistry of the bourbon inside. With embossed lettering and a cork stopper that feels substantial in your hand, the bottle commands attention on any shelf. It’s not just a vessel; it’s a tribute to tradition, craftsmanship, and the legacy of turning something old into something timeless.
The Gateway Pour
Pour yourself a glass, and you’re met with a stunning deep amber color. It’s the kind of rich hue that makes you think of a Kentucky sunset over rolling hills. Give it a swirl, and those thick, slow-moving legs tell you all you need to know—this pour is going to be lush, rich, and full of character.
The Courtyard of Aromas
The nose on this bourbon is a journey all its own. It’s layered and complex, with classic vanilla and caramel upfront. Beneath that, there’s the unmistakable scent of charred oak, a fresh doughiness, and even a zesty hint of citrus. The aromas blend harmoniously, offering a preview of the rich experience to come.
The Royal Feast
This is where the bourbon truly shines. The first sip greets you with creamy toffee and a burst of dark chocolate, followed by dried fruits—think peaches and maybe even a hint of honeysuckle. There’s also a touch of spice that adds depth without overwhelming. If spice isn’t your thing, a splash of water or a small ice cube can mellow it out nicely, making it even more approachable.
The Majestic Farewell
The finish is warm, lingering, and satisfying. Oak takes center stage here, reminding you of the time this bourbon spent aging. A subtle spice kick rounds it out, leaving a lasting impression. While my father-in-law found the spice a bit much, my brother-in-law couldn’t get enough. It just goes to show—that bourbon is as subjective as it is special, and that’s what makes every bottle an adventure.
In conclusion, Castle & Key Small Batch Bourbon is a testament to the marriage of history and craftsmanship. Marianne Eaves has woven a tapestry of flavors that pays homage to the legacy of the Old Taylor Distillery. So, the next time you find yourself in the company of this exquisite bourbon, savor not just the taste but the stories it whispers with every drop. Cheers to the past, present, and future of this fine bourbon!
