So, grab a glass, sit back, and let's see what makes this bourbon a must-try for any aficionado.

History Lesson: From the West with Love

Smoke Wagon Straight Bourbon Whiskey hails from Las Vegas, Nevada, courtesy of the Nevada H&C Distilling Co. The company was established in 2010 by screenwriter and director Jonathan Hensleigh and bar owner Aaron Chepenik. The distillery quickly earned a reputation for creating exceptional spirits. Their bourbon is aged in the arid desert climate, which accelerates the aging process and imparts unique characteristics to the whiskey. The name "Smoke Wagon" is a nod to the Old West, referring to the iconic Colt Single Action Army revolver, a symbol of rugged American frontier life. Now their bottles state aged and bottled at H&C but the juice is distilled at the legendary MGP in Indian at the Ross & Squibb Distillery.

Eye-Catching Elegance: The Bottle Design

Before we even get to the liquid inside, the Smoke Wagon bottle demands attention. This specific bottle was a gift from my wife’s Aunt and Uncle for Christmas. They obviously have good taste! The amber-hued glass is adorned with a detailed embossing of crossed guns and floral patterns, giving it a distinctly vintage and rugged look. Usually, the bottles embrace a color wax seal, and the ornate label further enhances its appeal, making it a standout on any shelf, as I have another offering from their distillery that is black and gold; very eye catching. However, mine was a Red, White, and Blue Edition. It's a bottle that not only holds quality bourbon but also serves as a conversation piece for your collection.

The First Pour: Amber Gold

When I handed this bottle to my father-in-law, his eyes twinkled with the “what do we have here” look. He is a man of few words folks. Once poured, the bourbon showed its true color in the glass—a sweet amber hue promising that this 4-year-old aged bourbon was going to bite.

Nose: Aromas That Dance

Upon uncorking the bottle, you're greeted with a symphony of aromas. Vanilla and caramel notes take center stage, accompanied by hints of toasted oak and a subtle spice. There's a touch of dried fruit lingering in the background, making the whole experience inviting and complex. It's like stepping into a cozy, wood-paneled library with a roaring fire on a crisp autumn evening.

Palate: A Flavorful Ride

The first sip is a revelation. Smoke Wagon Straight Bourbon Whiskey offers a well-balanced blend of sweet and spicy flavors. Caramel and vanilla are prominent, but they're complemented by layers of cinnamon, nutmeg, and a hint of pepper. The mouthfeel is smooth and slightly creamy, making each sip an enjoyable journey. As it develops on the palate, you get a touch of dried fruit and a whisper of oak, adding to the complexity. The spice, for me, stays a bit longer than I like. But if you enjoy that Nevada heat, you struck gold!

Finish: A Satisfying Farewell

The finish is long and warming, with a gentle spice that lingers pleasantly carried over from that flavorful ride on the palate. The sweetness of the caramel and vanilla slowly fades, leaving behind a final note of toasted oak and a mild peppery kick. It's a finish that invites you to take another sip, ensuring that the bottle won't last long once opened. If this spice is overwhelming, do what I did, which was add a couple of drops of water. This calmed the spice and opened up the bourbon a bit for me.

Final Thoughts: A Bourbon to Remember

Smoke Wagon Straight Bourbon Whiskey is a testament to the skill and dedication of the Nevada H&C Distilling Co. It's a bourbon that stands out in a crowded market, offering a unique combination of flavors and a rich history. Whether you're a seasoned bourbon aficionado or a curious newcomer, this bottle deserves a place on your shelf. And for my father-in-law's approval? It was stated to be a solid bourbon with the nod of “interesting” and “I kind of like it”. If this is anything to go by, you won't be disappointed. For me, It’s a little hot. Like I stated above add some water or even on the rocks to cool it down. I would even imagine this bottle and other offerings would be great in mixed beverages like an old fashion.

So, here's to Smoke Wagon Whiskey—a modern classic with a nod to the Old West.

Cheers to a dram good time! 🥃✨
