From the Heart of a Family
Ironclad is more than just a name; it's a legacy. The King Family, who proudly own and operate Ironclad, have infused their passion and dedication into every bottle. This family-owned distillery has deep roots, ensuring that each batch of bourbon reflects their unwavering commitment to quality. They also have unwavering customer service, making sure I was taken care of. Thank you, Kara!
History in Every Sip
Nestled in the historic James River in Newport News, Virginia, and within sight of the historic Battle of the Ironclads site, Ironclad Distillery draws inspiration from that time in history. This homage to strength and endurance is evident in every sip, with a robust flavor profile that pays tribute to its namesake. Ironclad Small Batch Bourbon is a liquid tribute to American heritage, from its deep amber hue to its warm, spicy finish. One of the most fantastic features of this bottle is its label. When you peel it back, you get to learn about the ironclad ships, making each bottle a piece of living history. It's kind of like when you were kids, and there was a prize at the bottom of a cereal box.
The Nose: An Inviting Prelude
Now for the best part! From the moment you hold the glass to your nose, Ironclad Small Batch Bourbon captivates you with its inviting aroma. Notes of caramel and vanilla are prominent, mingling with hints of toasted oak and a touch of dark fruit—a subtle spiciness rounds out the bouquet, promising a complex and enjoyable tasting experience. You can almost taste the freshness!
The Palate: A Symphony of Flavors
From the very first sip, Ironclad captivates your palate with its rich and full-bodied character. Notes of smooth caramel and golden honey introduce a delightful sweetness that seamlessly transitions into complex layers of dried fruits, warm cinnamon, and a subtle hint of nutmeg. The influence of oak is expertly balanced, imparting depth and sophistication without overwhelming the intricate flavors. There's something uniquely enchanting about Virginia whiskies—perhaps it's the local water or the distinctive climate—that sets them apart, and Ironclad embodies this charm beautifully. Unlike many small-batch distillers that lean heavily on oak dominance, Ironclad delivers a well-rounded and satisfying experience that truly stands out and keeps you coming back for more.
The Finish: A Warm Embrace
The finish of Ironclad Small Batch Bourbon is as rewarding as the journey leading up to it. It lingers with a warm, gentle spice that gracefully gives way to smooth notes of vanilla and oak. After all, who wants that harsh burn to overstay its welcome? A whisper of smokiness emerges at the end, adding a final touch of complexity that ensures each sip is unforgettable. This was the moment when the father-in-law gave his nod of approval—he wasn't entirely convinced until this satisfying finish.
Ironclad Inn - Bed, Breakfast, and Bourbon: A Trifecta of Bliss
Ironclads Kara King reminded me in our email conversation that they had an exciting development that I almost forgot, and it’s worth mentioning. The King Family has expanded its hospitality by purchasing the Kenmore Inn located in Fredericksburg and turning it into the first B&B&B—Bed, Breakfast, and Bourbon. The Ironclad Inn brings a unique experience that allows guests to immerse themselves in the world of Ironclad, combining the comforts of a cozy stay with the joys of bourbon tasting. It's a perfect getaway for any bourbon enthusiast looking to elevate their experience. As expected, they offer numerous days and times for tours, a bottle shop to purchase your favorite bourbon, a room for private events, and you can get a haircut at The Proper Barbershop located at the distillery. Never mind being a customer. Where’s the job application? I mean, can you really add anything else?!
A Toast to Ironclad
So, what's the final verdict? Should you add this bottle to your collection? Absolutely—YES! Full disclosure, though: there's a hint of a sour mash note, likely due to the four-grain recipe or the younger age statement. I didn’t notice it at first, but my father-in-law picked up on it. That said, any concerns about age vanish once you dive into the palate and finish. Whether you're a seasoned bourbon enthusiast or just starting your journey, Ironclad Small Batch Bourbon is a must-have. Its rich history, family dedication, and captivating B&B&B experience make it a standout. Though I haven't visited Ironclad myself, it's clearly worth a trip—too much to offer not to enjoy a tour. So, pour yourself a glass, savor the flavors, and raise a toast to the enduring spirit of Ironclad.
Cheers to a dram good time! 🥃✨
