Green River Wheated
Why Green River for My First Review?
Let’s call it sticker diplomacy. Green River Distillery and I struck a deal on Instagram: I’d post an honest review, and in return, they would send me a Green River sticker for my collection. (I’m a sucker for a good sticker.) With just one bottle in my possession—and no way to buy more in my home state—I thought, “Why not?” And so, Brown Water Review was born. Let’s dive into the glass and get this story rolling.
A Legacy Worth Pouring
Green River Distillery is more than just another name in bourbon—it’s a story of resilience and reinvention. Founded in 1885 by J.W. McCulloch in Owensboro, Kentucky, it was once dubbed the “most beautiful distillery in the world.” McCulloch’s bourbon became a gold-medal winner at world expositions and was even marketed with the tagline: “The Whiskey Without a Headache.”
Like many distilleries, Green River faced its share of challenges, including Prohibition, fires, and decades of dormancy. But in 2014, the brand was revived, blending its rich history with modern innovation. Now, they’re producing award-winning bourbons that honor their roots while catering to today’s whiskey lovers. From its legendary green horseshoe emblem to its meticulously aged wheated bourbon, Green River is a testament to how tradition and determination can shape a timeless craft.
The Bottle: Sleek & Chic
Green River Wheated Bourbon comes housed in a bottle that’s as approachable as the spirit itself. The clean design balances classic bourbon heritage with a contemporary edge, while the light copper liquid inside gleams with promise. It’s the kind of bottle you keep front and center on your shelf—both for the look and what’s inside.
The Pour: Copper Perfection
Pouring this bourbon feels like preparing for something special. The liquid flows out with a rich, light copper hue that sparkles in the glass. It’s not just pretty—it’s a warm invitation, signaling that this is going to be a smooth ride.
The Nose Knows
Stick your nose in the glass, and you’re greeted with caramel, vanilla, and oak, balanced by a bright citrus note. It’s a layered aroma that teases the depth of flavors waiting in that first sip. If bourbon could flirt, this one would do it with charm and confidence.
The Palate Party
This is where Green River Wheated Bourbon steps into the spotlight and commands applause. My brother-in-law and I put it head-to-head with Willett Pot Still on the same night, and while both had their merits, Green River stood out for its warmth and inviting character. It wasn’t about the recipes being opposites but about how Green River wrapped us in comfort.
With no rye in the mash bill, the mellow sweetness of wheat takes center stage, creating a creamy, velvety texture that feels like a cozy hug for your palate. Flavors of caramel and honey lead the charge, joined by rich notes of leather and butterscotch. It’s balanced, approachable, and absolutely satisfying, sip after sip.
Final Thoughts
Green River Distillery Wheated Bourbon is more than just a drink—it’s an experience. From the balanced flavor to its historical significance, it’s a standout in the world of wheated bourbons. It’s approachable for newcomers yet satisfying for seasoned enthusiasts. And while it’s not the easiest bottle to find for now, it’s well worth the hunt.
So, grab a bottle (or trade for one), and join me in raising a glass to a new favorite.
Cheers to a dram good time! 🥃
